Remembrance Day: Honouring the Past, Understanding the Present, and Building the Future

by Riccardo Manazza

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause to honour the men and women who have served, sacrificed, and safeguarded the freedom we hold so dear. We stand together in silence not only to remember the fallen but to reflect on the responsibility their courage has entrusted to us: to build a world worthy of their sacrifice.

As the poppies bloom across our country, they remind us that remembrance is not an act confined to the past. It is a living commitment a bridge between yesterday’s lessons, today’s challenges, and tomorrow’s possibilities.

A Legacy That Connects Generations

For me, Remembrance Day is deeply personal. My own family’s story threads through both World Wars. My grandfather, as a young man, served in the first, and later became an officer in the second. His duty was to protect the Italian skies from approaching aircraft—a role that, in the strange symmetry of history, found him on the opposite side of my wife’s grandfather, who served as a pilot.

Their stories remind me that in every conflict, humanity stands on both sides. Each soldier believed they were protecting their home, their family, their people. And in a profound way, they were all right each acting from a place of duty, love, and conviction.

From that understanding comes a truth worth remembering: our divisions are often born of perspective, not essence. When we recognize that, we begin to see that true peace is not the absence of conflict it’s the presence of understanding.

Lessons from the Past, for the Present

The past offers not only reverence but reflection. My grandfather spoke fondly of an era in Italy when, despite turmoil, leadership sought to uplift people, restore dignity, and create opportunity. History has since judged that period through a different lens, yet his perspective reminds me of something essential: context matters.

Every generation sees through its own prism shaped by its culture, its needs, and its understanding of the world at that time. To remember wisely is to see both the light and the shadow, and to learn from both.

Today, as we witness wars still unfolding across the world, remembrance must evolve into empathy. It must become a conscious act of awareness valuing every life, every culture, every dream. Because to truly remember is to affirm that every person on this planet deserves peace, dignity, and a chance to live freely.

The Art of War—and the Wisdom of Peace

There’s an old truth from The Art of War:

“The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.”

In an age where technology connects us instantly across continents, perhaps our greatest responsibility is to ensure that connection becomes understanding not division. We no longer need to fight to be heard or to conquer to be known.

With the tools and intelligence we possess today human and artificial alike we have the capacity to solve problems, not create them. To collaborate, not compete. To unite, not divide. The best wars are the ones never fought because wisdom prevailed before weapons were drawn.

Honouring Their Sacrifice Through Progress

The men and women who served did not do so for glory. They fought for the hope that their children and their children’s children could live in a world free of fear.

We honour them not only by standing in silence once a year but by speaking with integrity every day. By protecting our planet, rebuilding our communities, and fostering compassion in every act of our daily lives.

Remembrance is not passive it’s active. It’s the choice to keep striving for better.

Looking Forward: A Shared Vision of Peace

As we move deeper into an era of innovation and understanding, let us remember that technology is only as powerful as the heart that guides it. Artificial intelligence, renewable energy, sustainable construction these are not just tools; they’re extensions of our will to create a better world.

We have the opportunity to continue what they began: to build homes that respect the earth, communities that nurture connection, and systems that uplift rather than exploit.

When we choose unity over fear, progress over greed, and compassion over conflict, we carry forward their legacy.

Let’s continue building a future worth their sacrifice

one community, one home, one forest at a time.

Let’s plant the seeds of knowledge.
Let’s plant the seeds of freedom.
Let’s remember and let’s create.
